Picnics and Plunges: Discovering Underberg’s Three Pools

Nestled in the heart of the Southern Drakensberg, the Three Pools Hike in Underberg is a hidden gem that offers a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility. Recently, I had the opportunity to explore this stunning trail, and it was an experience I won’t soon forget.

We began our hike at the end of a dirt road, our spirits high and our backpacks filled with picnic essentials. The path, a narrow single track, wound its way through the mountainside, tracing the course of a lively stream. The sounds of nature were all around us – the gentle babble of water, the rustling of leaves, and the occasional bird calls.

After approximately 3 kilometers of hiking, we reached our destination: the Three Pools. These natural rock pools, fed by the crystal-clear stream, were a sight to behold. The water was so clear that we could see the rocky bottom and the occasional darting fish. Surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Drakensberg, it felt like we had stumbled upon a secret oasis.

The pools provided the perfect spot for a well-deserved rest. We unpacked our picnic and enjoyed our lunch on the smooth rocks, soaking in the serene environment. Afterward, we couldn’t resist taking a dip in the refreshing water. The coolness of the pools was invigorating, a perfect contrast to the warmth of the sun.

What makes the Three Pools Hike so special isn’t just the destination, but the journey itself. The trail offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, lush vegetation, and the occasional wildlife sighting. It’s a moderately challenging hike, suitable for most fitness levels, making it accessible for families and solo adventurers alike.

For those considering this hike, here are a few tips:

  1. Start Early: To make the most of your day and avoid the midday heat, begin your hike in the morning.

  2. Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water, snacks, sunscreen, and a hat. A swimsuit and towel are also a must if you plan to swim.

  3. Wear Appropriate Footwear: The trail can be uneven, so sturdy hiking shoes are recommended.

  4. Leave No Trace: Preserve the natural beauty of the area by taking all your trash with you and respecting the environment.

The Three Pools Hike is more than just a walk; it’s an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s a place where you can reconnect with nature, find peace in the stillness of the mountains, and create lasting memories.
